Words and Photos by Sage Indendi

Hi everyone! My name is Sage Indendi and I am a fishing guide here at Katmai Trophy Lodge located in beautiful King Salmon, Alaska. I may be a new face to some of you on here so I wanted to introduce myself a bit.

I am a Montana girl, born and raised on a small ranch in “Big Sky” country, which means that fly fishing is almost a part of my DNA.  I am not named after the famous fly rod company, although most of my clients are quick to ask.

I first became captivated by Alaska while reading the book, “Into the Wild”, but my desire to experience it first-hand was put on the back-burner while I pursued a career as a professional basketball player. After losing my senior year of eligibility at Oregon State University to injury and surgery, my dreams of going pro were shattered. Long story short, fate had other plans for me. A marketing job gave me the chance to travel to Alaska on a photo shoot and I jumped at the chance. The vast wilderness I found on my trip inspired my current fly-fishing obsession. It also led me to my current career as a fly fishing guide in Southwest Alaska’s Bristol Bay!

We are weeks away from wrapping our season up and all I can really say is that this year has been  absolutely unreal! We fish for five different species of salmon and rainbow trout and for those who are looking for a trout of a lifetime, you need to get up here. The Naknek river (where Katmai Trophy Lodge is located) is known for its trophy fish, and this year the size of the trout has been exceptional. I look forward to this time in our season all year because there is nothing more exciting than getting the opportunity to help clients swing up these giant fish. I live vicariously through my clients everyday and love what I do! Once the season up here ends, you can find me on the saltwater flats of Belize and Mexico all winter and spring long.

Big thanks to Free Fly for having me as a part of their team, and I hope see y'all up in Alaska!
