What's the swell height? What's the swell period? Which way will the wind be blowing? How many knots? What are the tides doing? How are the sandbars? How cold's the water? What's the air temp?
These are the questions running through my head anytime I'm thinking about chasing a swell up to the Outer Banks. Being about six hours away makes you second guess everything—you want to make sure it's worth the trip. That's also what makes scoring out there feel that much more special.
I've been driving to that beautiful stretch of sand they call Cape Hatteras National Seashore for as long as I can remember. A few things in life never get old—and one of them is that feeling when you pull up, see a spot, and can't help but sprint over the giant sand dune to see what Mother Ocean has in store for you.
When you reach the top and see perfect offshore waves with no one around, you know you're in for a treat.
I've traveled the world and surfed amazing waves in Tahiti, Indonesia, Hawaii, and more. But some of my most memorable surfs were right here in the Carolinas. There's something about being close to home and getting good waves that never loses its magic.
This last trip the Outer Banks gave us exactly that. The weather was perfect and the waves were firing. My favorite moment was driving down the beach and spotting a sandbar way out there, with wave after wave. As we got closer, the froth started rising—and sure enough there was a perfect, empty wave waiting for us.
We couldn't get into our wetsuits fast enough. We surfed for hours.
Moments like that make the six-hour drives, early wake ups, and endless forecast checking totally worth it.
