Nolan hung his dripping wetsuit in the back while we looked around the shop. The walls were covered in boards, tools, wood, and photos from epic, winter swells. Nolan has been designing and building wooden surfboards out of this unsuspecting warehouse in the woods of southern Maine for nearly ten years as part of the Grain Surfboards crew. Growing up on this cold, jagged coast, he was drawn to surfing and intrigued by board design.  After finding Grain, the combination of craftsmanship, woodworking, and modern board design drew him in. Creating unique, sustainable pieces that are fun to ride has kept him in the shaping bay for almost a decade. "We make a sustainable product with local Maine wood, these boards are built to have more impact on your surfing and less impact on the environment."
