Tanner here,

My sister Jenna and I grew up camping and fishing in Montana with our grandpa. He passed his enthusiasm for being on the water down to me, and I have the honor of sharing the same outdoor traditions with my own kids. Every Father’s Day, we end up talking a lot about these traditions—the lessons (and quirks) we’ve picked up over the years from our own dads and grandads.

From teaching us how to camp to blasting Willie Nelson on road trips, they showed us the ropes the best way they knew how. So below, we’ve rounded up a few memorable dad-isms, straight from the Free Fly crew. Who knows, maybe they’ll spark a new tradition in your own circle.

__________

My grandpa would always take us camping in Ward, SC. After a day of fishing, we would go out to the train tracks and lay out some pennies. There was always a train that came through around 4am, so in the morning, we’d go get our flat penny souvenirs to bring back home.

My dad swears by a 15 minute power nap. But he won't lay anywhere
too comfortable otherwise he'll nap too long. So he literally just lays in the middle of the floor and pops back up after 15 minutes. He'll do this when guests are over. No shame.

My dad instilled in me the importance of travel and exploring the world. He always encouraged me to seize every adventure with a resounding "yes" and reminded me that the only person capable of holding me back is myself.

When I started becoming follically challenged at the ripe age of 22, my dad helped me realize that the bald eagle is the most badass bird. He’d say, “If it's good enough to be America’s bird, it's good enough for us too.”

My dad raised me with the music always cranked up on our CD player, from Neil Young and Van Morrison to Cake… If it weren't for him, I wouldn’t have the same appreciation for music that I do today. Now, we love to go to concerts together and it's become "our thing.”

__________

My dad starts every phone call or voicemail with “Hey honey, it’s your dad”... as if I don’t have his number in my phone or recognize his voice! Classic dad move.

__________

My dad loves that “give a man a fish vs. teach a man to fish” saying. As kids, it drove us nuts. Of course, now I’m grateful he taught us how to do things for ourselves… but now we get to say it to him when he starts getting impatient with his smartphone.

__________

Every time we kicked off a road trip, my dad would throw on Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again.” We used to roll our eyes as kids, but now I cue it up whenever I’ve got a long drive.

__________

Growing up, Dad loved to fish at the river. I loved to go with him, but wasn’t really that interested in catching anything. So my dad taught me to skip rocks up river to “move the fish” towards his line. I realize now he probably just didn’t want me skipping rocks right next him and scaring off all the fish. To this day, I’m still pretty good at skipping rocks.

Anytime my dad and I disagree, he always says, "Well, Mel, that's what makes the market." Now, it's a running joke in our family, whenever someone has a different opinion, or likes something different than I do. It’s a good reminder that if everyone was the same, the world would be boring!
