There is no doubt that our love for the water and for good food goes hand in hand. When we’re not poling through the flats you can find us camped out at local eateries; circled around tables, sharing tales from past trips, and already planning our next.
To kick-off our fall season “Comfort On, Adventure Out" Series, we invited our barbecue ambassador, Michael Letchworth from Sam Jones BBQ, down to Charleston to get a taste of what a Free Fly "Day in the Life" is really all about. Along the way, we fished our hometown waters and toured some of the best bbq joints in town.
Intracoastal Waterway and the Backcountry
We met up with Michael, the Badfish guys (Marty and Dylan), and Free Fly captain/ambassador Johnny Crislip, right before sunrise. Johnny dumped his skiff into the water and we headed out in search of the Lowcountry’s famed Redfish. After taking a few fast and sharp turns through the flats, we found our spot and hooked up with enough reds to make our arms sore for the next few days. All while working up an appetite larger than the fish we caught.
After a good start to the day, we headed downtown to enjoy some of the best BBQ in town at Rodney Scott’s and Home Team Barbecue. Both of these joints conveniently (and dangerously for our waist size) sit within walking distance of our downtown Charleston Free Fly office.
It's times like these on the water and on the boat that seem to always spark the realest conversations and create the fondest memories.
Rodney Scott's BBQ
While sometimes it’s hard to find seating at Rodney’s, because of its popularity, it’s never hard to find good times and even better food.
Rodney (southern, chef, and business man with a James Beard Award) gave us the full southern hospitality wrapped in barbecue experience. We took a tour of his famous BBQ pit, a place with dark walls that seemed like if they could talk they would tell more stories than your grandfather ever had. Later he showed us the ends and outs of his joint, and afterwards we gathered around to enjoy some of the best eats in Charleston.
We had Rodney’s famous ribs, catfish, pulled pork/chicken, and capped it off with spoonfuls of banana pudding. It was truly what dreams are made of and for tourists and locals alike Rodney's is a must visit. We had an incredible time with Rodney and he waved us goodbye through his drive-through window, as we headed out to our next stop: Home Team BBQ.
Home Team BBQ
Home Team is truly a special BBQ joint. They do BBQ at a high-level, respect the process, all while adding their own creative touch to their dishes.
We sat down with chief operating partner/pitmaster Aaron Siegel to hear about their Charleston bacon making success story. Michael and Aaron chatted all things barbecue as we chowed down on a smorgasbord of pitmaster favorites. And of course, what's a visit to a Home Team without the smoked wings, nachos, and a frozen Gamechanger.

Revelry Brewing Company
There’s not many things better than ending a day with good company and brews. We linked up with some friends and walked over to Revelry Brewing, one of our favorite rooftop bars in Charleston, to enjoy a few drinks on tap and relive on the good times had that day.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of our "Comfort On, Adventure Out Series," where we leave the rods at home and head out for an afternoon of shrimping and an evening of Lowcountry boiling.
