284 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska, you’ll find the town of King Salmon perched on the banks of the Naknek River. This remote location is home to Free Fly Ambassador, Captain Sage Johnson, for half the year (the other half spent down in Belize), where she works as a fishing guide at her family’s lodge. She invited us up to the Katmai Trophy Lodge—only accessible by floatplane or the small local airport—to get an insider’s look at King Salmon’s otherworldly appeal.

Katmai Lodge is located just two miles outside of Katmai National Park, where you’ll discover a moon-like, volcanic landscape and plenty of brown bears in the wild.

Perfectly situated on the edge of tide water in the Naknek River, the lodge has quick access to both ocean-run salmon and the coveted trophy rainbow trout.
